Hyaluronic Acid or Botox? The Guide That Puts It in Order

Many people confuse Botox with hyaluronic acid. Both are injected into the face, both treat signs of aging, and both are very popular — but they are completely different materials that work in different ways and treat different types of wrinkles.

Let’s put things in clear order: what each one does, which areas it is suited for, and when it makes sense to combine them.

Botox – muscle relaxation

Botox (botulinum toxin) is not a filler. Its role is to relax muscles in a controlled way.

When we contract the facial muscles (in anger, laughter, or surprise), folds form in the skin. Over the years those folds become permanent expression lines. Botox weakens the muscle’s activity, and the skin above it spreads out and smooths.

  • Where is it mainly used? In the upper third of the face — between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and at the sides of the eyes (crow’s feet).
  • When do you see results? Usually within 3–14 days.
  • How long does it last? On average 3–4 months.

Hyaluronic acid – filling and restoring volume

Hyaluronic acid is a dermal filler. It is a gel-like material found naturally in the body, used to restore volume, fill hollows, and shape facial features.

With age the face loses volume and subcutaneous fat. The result is static wrinkles — ones that remain even when the face is at rest. Hyaluronic acid fills and lifts the area from within.

  • Where is it mainly used? In the lower two-thirds of the face — lips, smile lines, cheekbones, jawline, chin, and hollows under the eyes.
  • When do you see results? Immediately after treatment.
  • How long does it last? Usually from six months to a year and a half, depending on the material and the area.

The difference in one sentence

You can think of it this way:
Botox relaxes the muscle and helps prevent the wrinkle from forming.
Hyaluronic acid fills the missing volume and lifts the wrinkle from within.

Can they be combined?

Yes — and often that is the right approach. A refreshed face needs both smoother skin from expression lines (with Botox) and volume and definition in the right areas (with hyaluronic acid).

When the two are combined carefully and in measured amounts, the result can look natural and balanced — without an “overdone” look.

If you are unsure what is right for you — it is worth coming for a consultation. Correct assessment of wrinkle type and facial condition makes it possible to choose the most suitable treatment.
