How to Treat Gum Recession?

Gum recession is quite a common dental phenomenon where the gum tissue pulls back, gradually exposing the tooth's root. Beyond the aesthetic concern, untreated gum recession can cause extreme sensitivity and, in severe cases, even tooth loss.

What Causes Gum Recession?

  • Aggressive brushing: Using a hard toothbrush or applying too much pressure while brushing physically wears away the delicate gum tissue.
  • Gum disease (Periodontitis): The accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar causes inflammation that destroys the bone and gum tissue supporting the tooth.
  • Genetics: Some people have a genetic predisposition to thin and more vulnerable gum tissue.
  • Teeth grinding (Bruxism): Applying excessive force on the teeth creates strain that translates into gum recession.

Warning Signs You Should Know

Gum recession is a gradual process, so it's important to notice the early signs: increased sensitivity to cold/hot, teeth that suddenly look "longer", or a feeling of a notch near the gumline.

How Do We Treat It?

The good news is that we can halt the process and prevent future damage. In mild cases, proper brushing instruction combined with thorough tartar cleaning is enough. In more advanced cases I perform root planing (deep cleaning). In extreme situations, micro-surgical intervention can be considered.

Have you noticed sensitivity or a change in the appearance of your gums? Don't wait for pain to appear. Early treatment saves time, money, and discomfort.
