When people talk about medical aesthetic treatments, “hyaluronic acid” is one of the most common terms. In recent years it has been joined by the “skin booster” — a treatment focused on skin quality rather than adding volume.
Both treatments are based on hyaluronic acid, so many patients rightly ask: what is the actual difference, and which is right for me? Here is a clear explanation to help you understand the difference and choose wisely.
Classic hyaluronic acid: filling, shaping and restoring volume
With age, the face loses natural volume — in fat tissue and in bone. Classic hyaluronic acid is used as a dermal filler. It is usually thicker (cross-linked) and is designed to stay where it is injected.
- Goal: restore lost volume, fill deeper lines, and shape areas such as the lips, cheekbones or jawline.
- Injection depth: usually deeper — above the bone or within fat tissue.
- Result: a change in volume, contour or structure of the treated area.
Skin booster: hydration, glow and skin quality
A skin booster is not used to fill or change facial shape. It is a finer hyaluronic acid (non-cross-linked or lightly cross-linked), designed to spread in the skin and improve its quality from within.
- Goal: deep hydration, better texture, softer fine lines, and a fresher, more radiant look.
- Injection depth: tiny deposits into the mid layer of the skin (the dermis), often over a wider area such as the cheeks, neck or décolletage.
- Result: more supple, hydrated, healthier-looking skin — without changing facial features themselves.
So which is right for you?
The choice depends on what you want to improve:
If there is clear volume loss, thin lips, sunken cheeks or a deep line that bothers you — classic hyaluronic acid is usually the suitable option.
If facial structure looks good but the skin is dry, dull, tired or full of fine lines — a skin booster can improve skin quality and glow without changing shape.
Combining both treatments
In many cases the right approach is a combination. Specific areas can be shaped with classic hyaluronic acid (for example cheekbones or lips), and a skin booster can be added over wider areas to improve the skin itself.
The choice should be based on a professional assessment of the skin and face — not only on a product name. If you are unsure, it is worth coming for an evaluation so we can build a plan that fits you.
